Richard J. de Asla, MD
Richard J. de Asla, MD, is a board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon with subspecialty fellowship training in foot & ankle surgery. Dr. de Asla’s skill and expertise in treating conditions of the foot and ankle help his patients stay mobile and active throughout their lifetime. Dr. de Asla develops customized treatment plans that include both surgical and non-surgical options.
Dr. de Asla’s clinical interests include flatfoot and high arched foot deformity, bunion and hammertoe corrections, foot and ankle fractures, trauma and sports related injuries, diabetic foot conditions, Achilles tendon disorders and arthritic conditions of the foot and ankle. Dr. de Asla had the distinction of performing Massachusetts General Hospital’s first total ankle replacement in April, 2010.
His research interests include kinematics and biomechanics of the foot & ankle and he is extensively published in the field of foot & ankle surgery.
Dr. de Asla received his medical degree, Magna Cum Laude, May 1995, from State University of New York at Buffalo, NY. His postdoctoral training residency included 2 years of General Surgery from June 1995 to June 1997, at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY. Dr. de Asla completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery, July 1997 to July 2001, at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH.
Dr. de Asla completed his Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery, August 1, 2001 to July 31, 2002, at The Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University, New York, NY.
For eight years Dr. de Asla served as the Director of the Foot & Ankle Orthopaedic Division at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty from September 2004 until joining NCH in 2015. Prior to moving to Naples, Florida, Dr. de Asla was in private practice with, Excel Orthopedic Specialists, in Woburn Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. de Asla interests include travel, cycling, music, and photography. He lives with his wife and three children in Naples, Florida.
